after The Spontaneous Purchase this morning, i went crazy at the bookstore.
Faerie is never as far away as you think. Sometimes you find you have crossed all invisible line and must cope, as best as you can, with petulant princesses, vengeful owls, ladies who pass their time embroidering terrible fates or with endless paths in deep, dark woods and houses that never appear the same way twice. The heroines and heroes bedevilled by such problems in these fairy tales include a conceited Regency clergyman, an 18th century Jewish doctor and Mary, Queen of Scots as well as 2 characters from Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: Strange himself and the Raven King.
Wolves and grandmothers, the seven dwarfs, a goose made of gold... the folk tales collected by the Grimm brothers created an astonishingly influential imaginative world. However, this is also a world where a woman cooks her stepson and an evil queen dances to death in a pair of burning shoes. Violent, funny, disturbing and wise, these stories have intrigued both childen and adults for generations. This collection features the 279 stories in an acclaimed, modern, unexpurgated translation.

| amused December 2, 2007 02:56 PM PST I bought the Vintage Fear set as well. It was interesting to reread Brothers Grimm from a totally different perspective, especially now we know what originally happened to Rapunzel! The Bloody Chamber was... quite unexpected... | ||
